The Lexington League of Women Voters sponsors various candidate forums to allow citizens to learn more about the platforms of the candidates running for office. Forums are held for candidates in the primary elections as well as the general election. The League co-sponsors forums with the Lexington Public Library, hosting most forums in the Farish Theater in the Central Library. Library staff videotape and edit the forums and upload them on YouTube so citizens can view the forums at any time before the elections.
The League follows guidelines to maintain nonpartisanship and provide a fair opporunity for candidates to be heard. All candidates qualified to be on the ballot for the offices having a forum, are invited to participate. The League follows the same Federal Communication Commission Rule pertaining to Candidate Debates for Federal offices for local and state offices and does not host and videotape forums with only one candidate. When a candidate has a legitimate conflict, efforts are made to reschedule. If that is not possible or if a candidate declines to participate, their opponents are invited to an OPEN FORUM and given time to introduce themselves and talk about their interest in running for public office.
In addition, all candidates are invited to participate in the League's online voter guide, found at VOTE411.org which will be availabe in early October.
